Salt Mine & The Trip Home

There are salt mines all over this region.  Back when salt was used extensively for food preservation, I guess the term "white gold" was coined.  The salt in the Alps is sea water trapped by the movement of the Alps.  The water evaporated over time, a lot of time, and then the Alps folded over these deposits of salt.  Now they mine it out with drilling and water.
